Bring your own bag:  The Environmental Protection Department is holding a publicity event at the Hong Kong Book Fair to promote the the plastic shopping bag charging scheme.

Bag publicity drive opens

July 17, 2014

The Environmental Protection Department is holding a publicity event at the Hong Kong Book Fair to promote the full implementation of the plastic shopping bag charging scheme early next year.

The Levy Scheme on Plastic Shopping Bags will be fully extended to cover all retail outlets on April 1.

Free distribution of plastic bags will be banned at all points of retail sale, and no less than 50 cents will be charged for each bag, except for exemptions given on food hygiene grounds.

The publicity event features exhibition panels and computer games, and a "selfie corner" has been set up for photo taking. The popular Bring Your Own Bag mascot will meet visitors there.

An upcycling workshop will also be held at 4pm during the fair where instructors will show how to make pencil cases using waste cardboard, floor mats and cloths.

It will be held at booth 3B-A27 in Hall 3 of the Convention & Exhibition Centre until July 22.
