The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department has set up the Hong Kong Global Geopark Volcano Discovery Centre at the Sai Kung promenade to introduce the geopark’s features.
The unique hexagonal rock columns and Sai Kung's spectacular landscape formed during a spate of extremely violent volcanic eruptions 140 million years ago.
The centre features a 1:1 hexagonal exhibit showing a range of rock specimens and information on the geosites in Sai Kung. Visitors can learn about their formation and the uniqueness of Hong Kong's hexagonal columns.
The department’s Senior Geopark Officer Yeung Ka-ming said the centre is an ideal starting point for geopark visitors, where they can join guided tours and learn about the volcanic eruptions.
The centre will open to the public from July 16.
