Emission spot checks set

June 17, 2014

The Environmental Protection Department will use roadside remote sensing equipment to spot vehicles with excessive emissions, starting from September 1.

Notices will be given to owners of petrol and LPG vehicles with excessive emissions, which will be required to pass a dynamometer-based test at a designated centre within 12 working days. Vehicles not meeting requirements will have their licences cancelled.

The department reminded vehicle owners to undertake proper maintenance, including replacing key emission-control components such as catalytic converters, which can wear out. Free emissions testing for owners of petrol cars, LPG taxis and light buses will be given from now until the end of August.
