Seven housing estates will begin waste charging trials starting from tomorrow, the Environmental Protection Department says.
Amoy Gardens will begin its trial tomorrow and Island Resort will start on June 1, testing the charging modes of weight-based by buildings, volume-based by buildings and volume-based by households.
Chun Seen Mei Chuen and the Orchards will start volume-based by building charging trials on June 1.
Tak Tin Estate started a baseline survey on May 15, while Kwong Tin Estate and Chai Wan Estate are expected to begin theirs on July 1.
The pilot scheme aims to gather views and experience for implementing waste charging in the future. The trial involves a one-month baseline survey to collect waste disposal data for comparison, followed by a five-month trial of the chosen volume-based charging modes.
The department has appointed service contractors to provide support, including enhancing recycling facilities, supplying free designated garbage bags, measuring waste and recyclables daily, monitoring compliance, analysing waste disposal and mock charges trends, providing publicity and environmental education, and carrying out opinion surveys.
