Sky scenario:  Hong Kong Observatory Director Shun Chi-ming briefs the media on weather forecasting upgrades.

9-day weather forecasts set

March 17, 2014

The Hong Kong Observatory will enhance its weather forecast service next month by extending its prediction period from seven days to nine.

Hong Kong Observatory Director Shun Chi-ming told the media today the extension of the weather forecast period can help warn the public of weather changes earlier, helping them better plan activities.

For this year, he expects Hong Kong's annual rainfall will be normal to below normal, and forecasts the number of tropical cyclones affecting the city to range from four to seven, starting in June.

Mr Shum said the Observatory will continue to enhance its automatic weather station network, and plans to increase observation sites at Kai Tak Runway Park, Yuen Long Park, in Sheung Shui and on Lamma Island.

It is also co-operating with the Polytechnic University to implement a community weather observing scheme to encourage the public to upload and share weather photos and observation reports through its website, mobile app and social network.

Together with the Space Museum and the University of Hong Kong, the Observatory also launched a website today to provide weather information for astronomical observation hot spots in Hong Kong for the public to plan their observation activities.
