Waste plan support needed: KS Wong
May 21, 2013
Hong Kong needs to create a culture that promotes waste reduction and recycling, Secretary for the Environment KS Wong says.
Speaking to the media after attending a radio programme today on the new blueprint for sustainable use of resources, he said the majority of the public support the idea of volume-based charges to reduce waste.
“So we are now in a stage to engage the public to talk about the details of implementation, including the level of charge,” he said.
The blueprint outlines a strategy that relies on volume-based waste charging, landfills and waste-to-energy facilities.
Using new technology, waste-to-energy facilities are clean and can turn waste into a usable resource, Mr Wong said.
Such technology has proven successful in other Asian cities like Seoul, Singapore and Macau, where a facility can be located within less than one kilometre away from residential apartments.
The Government simply needs to build public confidence in the technology, he said.
