Chief Secretary Carrie Lam visited the Environmental Protection Department today.
She first toured its air laboratories, which support the operation of the air quality monitoring network of general and roadside stations throughout Hong Kong.
She was briefed by Director of Environmental Protection Anissa Wong on air and water quality monitoring and the application of computer models.
She then went to the Island West Transfer Station in Kennedy Town to learn about Hong Kong's waste management infrastructure, including the operation of refuse transfer stations, landfills and the chemical waste treatment facility.
Mrs Lam toured the station, built in a cavern under Mount Davis. It receives 530 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily from Central & Western and Southern Districts.
She chatted with staff and praised their efforts in promoting a healthy, liveable and sustainable environment in Hong Kong.
