Environment chief tours waste sites
May 11, 2013
The Government will soon announce a blueprint on waste management policy, Secretary for the Environment KS Wong says.
Mr Wong briefed lawmakers during a site visit today to local waste management facilities, and spoke about the results of recycling efforts.
The new plan for sustainable use of resources will elaborate on a "reduction first" waste management policy, and map out the Government's comprehensive strategy and action plans.
He and several members of the Legislative Council visited the Tuen Mun and Yuen Long Recycle Centre at Tsing Hoi Circuit, Tuen Mun, which collects recyclables from residential estates and commercial buildings in the district.
It recycles an average of four tonnes of waste plastic per month, and collects waste computers, small electrical appliances and glass bottles for recycling or reuse.
Mr Wong went to Tuen Mun EcoPark to learn about its environmental promotion efforts and visited tenants, such as those which process waste plastic and electronics.
He also toured the restored Tseung Kwan O Stage I Landfill and South East New Territories Landfill, and looked at the pet garden and cycle tracks being built on the restored landfill.
