Building energy codes gazetted
February 10, 2012
The 2012 edition of the Building Energy Code and the Energy Audit Code have been gazetted, and take immediate effect.
The two codes of practice provide technical details for the full implementation of the Buildings Energy Efficiency Ordinance, which will come into effect in September.
The ordinance’s implementation is expected to result in energy savings of 2.8 billion kWh in the first decade, equivalent to a carbon dioxide emission reduction of about 1.96 million tonnes.
Once the ordinance is in full operation, relevant building services installations in newly constructed buildings will have to meet the minimum energy efficiency standards and requirements as specified in the Building Energy Code. Existing buildings will also be required to comply with the code when undergoing major retrofitting works.
Commercial buildings and commercial portions of composite buildings will be required to carry out energy audits of central building services installations under the Energy Audit Code every 10 years. Results must be displayed in a conspicuous position at the buildings’ main entrance for public inspection.
The Electrical & Mechanical Services Department drew up the the two codes of practice after consultation with relevant trade parties, professional bodies, academics and government departments.
