The Court of Appeal's decision to jail three young activists has been made in accordance with the due process of law.
Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung made the statement to the media after attending a radio programme today, saying judicial independence is the cornerstone of Hong Kong's success.
Joshua Wong, Alex Chow and Nathan Law were jailed earlier this week for storming "Civic Square" in 2014.
"We have got a fiercely independent judiciary in Hong Kong, and due process has been observed in reaching the decision of the Court of Appeal," Mr Cheung said.
"The Bar Association and the Hong Kong Law Society last night issued a joint statement categorically denying any link with outside factors, any factors other than the law, involved in the decision of the court."
Mr Cheung also said the incident will not affect the Government's efforts to communicate with young people.
"We will, first of all, upgrade the Youth Commission into a Youth Development Commission. I will be chairing it myself.
"The idea is to co-ordinate better (the) Government's response to youth aspirations, requests and demands on all fronts.
"I am sure this will take us forward in terms of building (a) relationship with our younger generation and also providing more opportunities for upward social mobility in the long term."
