Gov't will mend LegCo ties

July 19, 2017

The Government is determined to rebuild its relationship with pan-democrat legislators.

Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung made the statement to the media today in response to the recent court ruling that Legislative Council oaths taken by Lau Siu-lai, Yiu Chung-yim, Nathan Law and Leung Kwok-hung were invalid.

Mr Cheung said: "We are determined to really, to rebuild, as it were, our relationship on an equal footing, and particularly adopt a business-like attitude with the overall interests of the Hong Kong community in mind and as a cardinal principle to deal with all sorts of LegCo business."

He called on legislators, especially those from the pan-democratic camp, to vet the eight funding items on the LegCo Finance Committee agenda today in a rational and sensible manner as they are all urgent livelihood issues.

He said the Government will follow up on the disqualification of the four legislators in accordance with the law, adding it has no intention of bringing up new cases for now.

"We will adopt a sensible, rational, amicable approach, but within the framework of the rule of law."
