CE urges legislators to vet funds

July 15, 2017

Chief Executive Carrie Lam has urged pro-democracy legislators to carry out their duty to scrutinise the funding application for measures to enhance education quality.

She made the plea after today's Legislative Council Finance Committee meeting was cut short due to the furor over the recent court ruling that oaths taken by legislators Lau Siu-lai, Yiu Chung-yim, Nathan Law and Leung Kwok-hung were invalid.

Mrs Lam said she understands the feelings of pro-democracy legislators over the court ruling, but emphasised that they still have a public duty to vet the funding application.

Noting the legislature will go into summer recess soon, she called on pro-democratic legislators to attend the committee meeting on July 19 to consider the funding of $3.6 billion to implement the quality education package.

If the funding is not passed, she said the creation of regular teaching posts may not be realised and the $30,000 annual subsidy cannot be given to students on time to take full-time self-financing undergraduate courses for the 2017-18 school year.

Mrs Lam also said no more judicial reviews will be contemplated on the validity of legislators’ oaths, adding she will strive to improve ties with the Legislative Council.
