Gov't to study oath-taking ruling: CS

July 14, 2017

The Government will study the High Court judgment on the oath-taking of four lawmakers to determine the next course of action.

Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung made the statement to the media today, saying the ruling has affirmed the legal requirements for oath-taking at legislators' swearing-in ceremony.

The court ruled the oaths taken by legislators Lau Siu-lai, Yiu Chung-yim, Nathan Law and Leung Kwok-hung were invalid and disqualified them from the Legislative Council.

Mr Cheung said the ruling will not affect the Government’s relations with the council.

“Definitely this is an isolated case. And we started off the first fortnight of operation. I think it’s a good, encouraging start.

“I'm sure that through candid dialogue, friendly interaction and respecting the role of both the executive and the LegCo, we can continue these harmonious, cordial relations in the months to come.”
