CE not to seek second term

December 09, 2016

Chief Executive CY Leung announced he will not stand in the next Chief Executive election because he needs to take care of his family.

Mr Leung told reporters today that his decision not to seek a second term in office was understood by the Central Government.

“The Central Authorities, including the top leaders in the country, have been very supportive of my work over all these years,” he said.

He thanked those who have given him support to run for a second term.

Mr Leung said he has to balance the responsibilities he owes the Hong Kong community with that he holds for his family.

If he runs in the election, it would put too much pressure on his family in the coming months, he said.

Mr Leung stressed he will concentrate on his work in the remaining months of the current term, including the Policy Address to be announced next month.

He will also strive to fulfil the promises made in his election platform five years ago, such as those relating to retirement protection, MPF offsets and standard working hours.
