Election misconduct not tolerated

August 26, 2016

Hong Kong has a good election culture with no tolerance for electoral deception, threats or violence.

The Electoral Affairs Commission made the statement today in response to media enquiries on the reported withdrawal of a Legislative Council election candidate.

It said complaints will be dealt with in a strict manner and referred to law enforcement agencies.

It said it will ensure the LegCo election is conducted in an open, honest and fair manner, and urged people who encounter election misconduct to report the matter immediately.

The Elections (Corrupt & Illegal Conduct) Ordinance has explicit and stringent provisions to regulate improper election behaviour.

Any act affecting a person’s candidature by bribery, force, duress or deception is a corrupt conduct liable to seven-years' jail.
