CE mourns 2nd fireman

(June 23, 2016)

Chief Executive CY Leung has expressed sadness over the death of another fireman who succumbed to injuries suffered in the Ngau Tau Kok fire today.

The officer was 37-year-old Senior Fireman Samuel Hui. His death comes two days after another fireman died from fighting the blaze.

Meeting the media with other officials tonight, Mr Leung said the Government will give full support to Officer Hui's family, and to the families of other firemen injured in the blaze.

Mr Leung held another inter-departmental meeting tonight, the second of the day, to get updates on the fire and to plan follow-up action.

Director of Fire Services Lai Man-hin said there are a large number of locked storage facilities in the building, and firemen are having to break into them to deal with the fire.

He said all firemen have undergone professional training and can assess the risks at the scene, and have made progress in the past two days, but there are many uncertainties.

The Fire Services Department will set up a special task force to investigate the fire and the causes of death of the two officers.

Director of Buildings Hui Siu-wai said he found the building structure, as seen from outside and the second floor and staircases, to be satisfactory. Buildings Department staff will work with firemen to assess the safety of the premises, he added.
