Police to contact Lam Wing-kee

June 17, 2016

Police will contact bookseller Lam Wing-kee after he told the media he was detained while in Shenzhen after leaving Hong Kong last October.

In a statement today the Government said Police will learn more from Mr Lam and will take appropriate follow-up action.

The statement said Police took the initiative to meet Mr Lam at the boundary control point after he returned to Hong Kong on June 14. At that time Mr Lam asked Police to cancel his missing-person case and stated he did not require assistance from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government or Police.

The Government said it has all along attached great importance to the Causeway Bay bookstore incident. Police have already established a case for investigation and have also been making enquiries to, and seeking assistance from, Mainland authorities through the existing mechanism.

The Government said it has all along been dealing with matters relating to the HKSAR strictly in accordance with the principle of "one country, two systems" and the Basic Law.

It said the Basic Law only authorises Hong Kong law enforcement agencies to enforce laws in Hong Kong. Mainland and overseas law enforcement agencies do not have the authority to enforce laws in Hong Kong. They will contravene Hong Kong laws if they do so.

The Government has all along attached importance to the personal safety of every Hong Kong resident, and will resolutely safeguard the rights and freedoms of Hong Kong residents in accordance with law.
