Acting Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung today met a high-level Special Olympics International delegation led by its chairman Timothy Shriver.
The delegation is in Hong Kong to attend a launch ceremony to commemorate the Special Olympics Hong Kong 40th anniversary.
Noting that Hong Kong was one of the first economies to join the Special Olympics movement, Mr Cheung said the movement’s mission to promote sports activities for people with intellectual disability complies with the Government's commitment to promoting a caring and cohesive society.
He said he was glad to learn from Special Olympics Global Ambassador, and basketball legend, Yao Ming that athletes with disabilities are able to build self-confidence and enjoy better social networking through participation in sports.
