Chief Secretary Carrie Lam appeals for support of two Commission on Poverty initiated programmes that help young people achieve upward mobility - Future Stars and Life Buddies.

She made the appeal as the commission's Chairperson at the opening of the Future Stars Appreciation Ceremony 2015 today.

Mrs Lam noted the Future Stars programme had built a solid reputation. In 2015, more than 350 organisations supported or sponsored activities and scholarships under the programme, benefiting more than 8,000 youths. This was an increase of 40 supporting organisations helping 1,000 more young people compared with the year before.

The programme helps youths broaden their horizons and gain better self-understanding to assist them in identifying their goals and mapping out their future, through activities such as corporate visits, workplace skills training and internships.

The Upward Mobility Scholarship under the programme aims to award students demonstrating resilience in the face of adversity and encourage them to pursue their goals. There are 1,145 awardees this year.

Mrs Lam said that building on the success of the Future Stars programme, the commission launched the Life Buddies mentoring programme last month and is now recruiting mentors.

She hoped the Life Buddies programme could encourage more people from the community to become mentors and guide senior secondary school students to identify their goals and plan for their future.

About 1,000 people attended the ceremony, including representatives of participating and sponsoring organisations from businesses, professional services and the education and social service sectors, as well as scholarships awardees.
