No desire to lower poll age limit

October 13, 2015

Acting Chief Executive Carrie Lam says there was no indication during discussions on Hong Kong's democratic development that the age for standing in elections needed to be lowered.

Mrs Lam made the statement ahead of an Executive Council meeting this morning in response to reporters' questions about a recent judicial review application seeking to lower the minimum age for Legislative Council election candidates.

She noted that in the process of taking forward Hong Kong's democratic development and in discussions with the Legislative Council and with the public on electoral arrangements, the Government had not received a very strong desire to lower the age from 21 to 18.
