Chief Executive CY Leung says the Department of Justice’s decision to prosecute former Chief Executive Donald Tsang was made independently, and did not involve any political consideration.
Speaking to reporters before the Executive Council meeting today, Mr Leung said the Basic Law has stated that the department shall control criminal prosecutions, free from any interference. The Government attaches great importance to guaranteeing its independence.
Once a case has begun legal proceedings, people should not comment on it to avoid affecting the trial's fairness.
Mr Leung also urged people not to disturb Mr Tsang and other people related to the case.
