CE commends civil servants

 Since 1999, the Civil Service Bureau has been organising the Civil Service Outstanding Service Award Scheme on a biennial basis, to recognise the efforts of departments and teams which provide excellent service.

This year, 33 entries from 19 bureaux and departments were awarded under nine categories of the award scheme.

Chief Executive C Y Leung officiated at this year’s awards and commended the winners for their service excellence.

The Food & Environmental Hygiene Department and Fire Services Department’s team work was recognised with the Partnership Award gold prize.

When a fire broke out at the Fa Yuen Street hawker area in 2011, improving fire safety in those areas became a top priority.

Both departments joined forces to carry out the Hawker Assistance Scheme in 2013, which provided subsidies to more than 4,000 hawkers in 43 fixed-pitch hawker areas for stall reconstruction and relocation and to improve fire safety.

Some 500 stalls located directly in front of building staircases were given priority for relocation. More than 90% of them have now been moved to safer areas.

Fire Services Department Divisional Commander Cheng Sui-on, who was responsible for relocating the hawker stalls, said it was a challenging project, as the hawker areas were different sizes and the hawkers’ various needs had to be met as well.

Most of the hawker areas have seen an improvement in fire safety standards. Pioneering designs were also incorporated into the new stalls.

 

Yau Tsim District Police received the Team Award gold prize under the specialised service category for initiating “Project Gemstone”.

The project helps non-ethnic Chinese residents to improve their Chinese language skills. Some of its students have successfully joined the Police force.

The Leisure & Cultural Services Department was awarded the Team Award gold prize under the general public service category for its 2013 exhibition Legends of the Giant Dinosaurs, which saw a record-breaking number of visitors interact with robotic dinosaurs at the Science Museum.

Chief Executive CY Leung officiated at the Civil Service Outstanding Service Award Scheme 2015 presentation ceremony today, commending the winners for their service excellence.

Speaking to the ceremony, Mr Leung noted the awardees' outstanding contribution to the city, encouraging other civil servants to keep enhancing their service quality.

Secretary for the Civil Service Clement Cheung and 600 guests and civil servants attended the ceremony at the Convention & Exhibition Centre.

Thirty-three entries from 19 bureaus and departments were awarded under the scheme's nine categories.

Mr Cheung said the scheme is to provide a platform for civil servants to exchange experience, and encourage them to enhance service quality with creative mindsets.

A one-hour television special presenting this year's winning cases will be shown on TVB Jade at 7.30pm and RTHK TV 31 at 9pm on September 26.
