Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen today supported Chief Executive CY Leung’s decision to focus Government efforts on economic development and livelihood issues in the coming two years.
He told the media the community must accept the disappointment of the Legislative Council's vetoing of the political reform package last week.
He refuted claims that the Government's decision not to restart the political reform exercise during the remainder of Mr Leung's administrative term breaches the Basic Law, noting that Article 45 states Hong Kong must achieve progressively the ultimate aim of selecting the Chief Executive by universal suffrage.
However, this does not mean the Government must deal with constitutional development on a daily basis, he said, adding that the next Chief Executive can decide whether it is the right time to start the constitutional reform process again.
