Extreme approach not beneficial: CE

June 23, 2015

Chief Executive CY Leung has expressed concern about the increasingly extreme approach adopted by some political parties, which he said is not beneficial to society.

Speaking to reporters before an Executive Council meeting this morning, Mr Leung also said it was regrettable that Ronny Tong had resigned from the Legislative Council, adding that Mr Tong represents a moderate and rational voice in the pan-democratic camp.

The Chief Executive said he agreed with Mr Tong that Hong Kong, as a special administrative region, enjoys a high degree of autonomy, but Mr Leung noted that it is not absolute autonomy, so it is important to maintain communication with the Central authorities.

He added that the relationship between the executive and legislature is important and that the Government will arrange a by-election in accordance with the legal requirements, but the decision on whether to take part or not rests with individuals and political parties.
