CE Office rejects bogus claim

May 21, 2015

An allegation that Chief Executive CY Leung, as Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong, has intervened in the appointment of the former Law Faculty Dean Prof Johannes Chan as Vice-President is untrue and fabricated.

The Chief Executive's Office issued the statement today after the President of the Baptist University Students' Union was quoted in media reports making the claim.

The office said a statement had been issued earlier refuting the allegation, while the university has also repeatedly and openly clarified the issue.

The office said people should not mislead society and manipulate public opinion to exert pressure and sabotage appointment systems to achieve political or other aims.

The Government will uphold the principle of meritocracy and make appointments in accordance with the ordinances of respective institutions, it added.
