Constituency change proposed

May 21, 2015

The Electoral Affairs Commission has recommended transferring a seat from Hong Kong Island to the Kowloon West constituency for the 2016 Legislative Council election.

It was one of the proposals put forward for public consultation today under the commission's provisional recommendations on the boundaries and names of geographical constituencies for the 2016 LegCo polls.

During a press conference this afternoon, commission chairman Justice Barnabas Fung said the seat transfer was due to a change in population.

Other constituencies will have the same number of seats when compared with the existing arrangements, which is five seats for Kowloon East, and nine seats each for New Territories West and New Territories East.

The commission also recommended retaining the existing boundaries of the five geographical constituencies, as there is no obvious and fundamental change in circumstances justifying alteration.

The consultation will end on June 19. People can express their views by email or at a public forum to be held at Lai Chi Kok Community Hall on June 11.

Mr Fung also reminded electors who have received letters requesting confirmation of their registered address to reply by the statutory deadline of July 2, or they will not be able to vote in November's District Council election.
