Former Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa expressed in a statement his deep sadness at founding Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew's passing, and his belief that the leader's legacy and profound conviction in governance will persist.
The statement noted that the two had known each other for decades, and that Mr Tung had learned much from Mr Lee’s wisdom and unique insights.
He described Mr Lee as a giant of the times. His wisdom and forward-looking vision, great perseverance, strong leadership and care for people led the transformation of Singapore from a trading port into a prosperous country which people are proud of, playing a unique role in the international arena.
The statement also noted the similarities Hong Kong and Singapore share. Mr Lee had held the relationship between Singapore and Hong Kong in high regard and he hoped to enhance co-operation between the two places for their mutual benefit.
Mr Tung believes Mr Lee will long be remembered. He is also certain that his son Lee Hsien Loong will uphold his father's spirit and lead Singapore to go from strength to strength on the path of stability and prosperity.
Mr Tung will represent the Chief Executive and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government at the state funeral service for Mr Lee in Singapore tomorrow.
