CE rejects Next article

February 16, 2015

Chief Executive CY Leung has refuted claims published in Next Magazine regarding his son's medical education.

The magazine claimed Lau Ming-wai’s donation to setup a Karolinska Institutet research centre in Hong Kong reflects "the intricate relationship between the CE and powerful individuals and that he is paving the way for his son".

The Chief Executive’s Office issued a statement today saying the allegation is unfounded. It said the institute has been working with Hong Kong's tertiary institutions, and the Commerce & Economic Development Bureau, the Innovation & Technology Commission and the Science & Technology Parks Corporation have been discussing co-operation opportunities with it since 2010.

Mr Leung visited the institute in Sweden last May to promote Hong Kong. He mentioned his visit and the co-operation opportunities with the institute to Mr Lau in a conversation last year. Mr Lau then spoke with the institute later without Mr Leung’s involvement.

In the conversation Mr Leung mentioned his son was going to undertake post-doctoral research at the institute, and declared the same during internal discussions within the Government.

His son's admission is an independent decision by the institute, and Mr Leung has no "secret card" with Mr Lau as claimed by Next Magazine, the statement added.
