Police tolerance is not weakness: CE

December 01, 2014

Chief Executive CY Leung said today that there is an increasing demand for Police to take enforcement action against the occupation, as he urged protesters to stop their illegal behaviour.

Speaking to reporters this afternoon, Mr Leung said the Government, the Police and Hong Kong people have been tolerant towards the protesters over the past two months to avoid confrontation and people getting hurt.

But he said some student organisations had encouraged people to surround the Government headquarters at Tamar yesterday to paralyse Government operations, while some protesters had charged at Police cordons.

Mr Leung made it clear that people should not mistake the Police force's tolerance for being weak or incapable of doing its job.

He said he understood people's aspirations for greater democracy in electing the Chief Executive, but stressed that Hong Kong is a law-abiding society and citizens should express their views in a lawful manner.

Mr Leung reiterated that implementing universal suffrage for the Chief Executive election in 2017 has to be achieved in accordance with the Basic Law and the relevant decisions of the National People's Congress Standing Committee.
