Sub-committee decision regretted

November 26, 2014

Financial Secretary John Tsang has expressed disappointment at the Public Works Subcommittee’s decision to adjourn discussion on two funding proposals involving the Liantang-Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point and a study on the proposed Sunny Bay reclamation.

Mr Tsang said in a statement the Legislative Council should examine public works funding proposals put forward to it and make proper decisions in the best interest of Hong Kong on behalf of the people.

The tender validity date for an important contract of the Liantang-Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point and associated works project will expire on December 31. It is expected the project will suffer delays and further cost increases if the Government needs to re-tender, the statement said.

Reclamation at Sunny Bay is found to have less impact on the public and the environment, after two rounds of public engagement. The proposal also helps reuse surplus public fill.

Housing and land supply will also be affected if the planning and engineering study on the project cannot start.

The two items are important to the economic development and livelihood of Hong Kong. The Government will resubmit them to the sub-committee as soon as possible.
