Strong economy buoys livelihoods

November 25, 2014

It is hard to solve livelihood problems without the support of economic development, Chief Executive CY Leung said today.

He urged lawmakers to deal with both issues as soon as possible.

Mr Leung told reporters before the Executive Council meeting that some lawmakers' filibustering in the Legislative Council had gone on for too long when it came to livelihood issues.

He gave the example of South Korea which has done well in developing its science and technology sector, and its creative and innovative industries in recent years, which have boosted the economy.

He urged the legislators to deal with livelihood and economic measures, including supporting the establishment of the new Innovation & Technology Bureau, as soon as possible.

Mr Leung also spoke about the scheduling of items on the LegCo agenda. He believes that welfare issues that involve handing out money should not be the only ones given top priority, as those related to social and economic development are equally urgent.

He stressed that as long as there is no economic development it is hard to sustain livelihood and welfare work.
