The Basic Law requires that the nomination committee for the Chief Executive election in 2017 be evenly comprised of representatives of different social groups, Chief Executive CY Leung says.
Speaking to the media before an Executive Council meeting today, he gave an example of balanced participation in the existing nomination committee, citing sports and religious sectors that represent a small population but have decisive roles in society.
He noted that the Basic Law does not mention civil nomination, but advocates that the nomination committee be broadly representative.
He stressed that the Government must implement constitutional reform based on the National People's Congress Standing Committee’s decisions and the Basic Law.
