Violent protests concern health chief

October 19, 2014

Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-Man says he is concerned about the Occupy Central movement’s development, especially as there seems to be evidence pointing to purposeful violence and attacks in Mong Kok.

As the Government will meet the Federation of Students soon in the hope of resolving the situation, Dr Ko appeals to protesters not to resort to violence at this time as it would only be counter-productive.

He said there are tens of injuries due to the occupation movement each day, but emergency departments' operation had not yet been affected. If the movement turns violent, a resulting large number of causalities might affect the emergency departments' normal operation.

Speaking on the Ebola virus disease, he said it is prudent for Hong Kong to review whether training on the use of protective gear is sufficient, after two medical personnel in the United States were infected while wearing protective gear.

Dr Ko also said as the weather turns cooler, it is expected that there will be sporadic cases of the H7N9 avian influenza in the southern Mainland, posing risks to Hong Kong.

The Government will have an inter-departmental meeting next week to review policies on combating infectious diseases.
