Student meeting preparations underway

October 08, 2014

The Government is working on the arrangements for the meeting with Federation of Students representatives to discuss constitutional reform.

Under Secretary for Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Lau Kong-wah told reporters today the two sides agreed at the preparatory meeting yesterday on two agenda items, namely the constitutional basis and legal framework of the reform.

Mr Lau said student representatives asked that their opinions on reform be heard, adding he has reflected this to the Chief Secretary.

Noting some groups have called for more people to join the occupation of streets during the meeting, Mr Lau said the Occupy Central movement has caused great disturbance to people’s lives and many want it to end as soon as possible.

He said the Government is concerned about such action, which is not conducive to creating a good atmosphere for the upcoming meeting.

Mr Lau said efforts are continuing to arrange the meeting, such as finding an appropriate venue.
