Intercity forum fosters Taiwan ties

July 31, 2014

Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Gregory So and Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man spoke at the 2014 Hong Kong-Taichung Intercity Forum in Taichung today.

Over 150 government officials, experts and stakeholders from both sides attended the forum, which focused on medical services development and tourism promotion.

Mr So said the Hong Kong Government and the tourism sector have been committed to diversifying tourism products, by promoting environmental and cultural tourism, showcasing the city’s unique festivals, local cuisine and organising mega events.

He said Hong Kong and Taiwan can work together to form an attractive route for cruise travel.

Dr Ko said Chinese medicine development has been rapid in Hong Kong, and the Government has put in place an effective regulatory regime to ensure public health and foster consumer confidence.

He said both sides have been working closely in medical services, citing the collaboration with Taichung's China Medical University to develop standards for Chinese materia medica as an example.

At the close of the forum, Hong Kong Economic, Trade & Cultural Office (Taiwan) Director John Leung said both sides have huge potential to co-operate in tourism promotion and medical services, and hopes this exchange platform can be extended to other cities in Taiwan.
