CGO to get security boost

July 17, 2014

The East Wing Forecourt of the Central Government Offices, Tamar, has been closed until the end of August for the construction of a perimeter fence to boost security.

The fence will be built along Tim Mei Avenue and the boundary between the Forecourt and the Legislative Council Complex.

The work will enhance the overall capacity of the building to withstand potential security threats.

The Government said recent public order events at the LegCo Complex have illustrated the need for upgraded security.

The public can continue to hold meetings or processions in the Forecourt during specified hours on Sundays and public holidays, subject to the Director of Administration’s permission.

Upon erection of the security fence, the Forecourt will be closed to the general public from 11pm to 6am daily.

During the temporary closure, people can use the designated public activities area on the pavement at Tim Mei Avenue outside the East Wing Forecourt to for public meetings or to submit petition letters.

During the construction period, pedestrian access through the Forecourt to the LegCo Complex will be closed and people can use the alternative routes via Tamar Park or the escalators and elevators connecting the elevated walkway to Harcourt Road and Tim Mei Avenue.

The public and press entrance on the ground floor of the East Wing will also be temporarily closed. People can use the staff entrance on the second floor instead.
