HK-Philippine relations normalise

April 23, 2014

The resolution of the Manila hostage tragedy has enabled the normalisation of bilateral relations between Hong Kong and the Philippines.

Chief Executive CY Leung made the statement today after a meeting between the Hong Kong Government, representatives of the tragedy's victims and their families, and Philippine officials, including the country's cabinet secretary and Manila's mayor.

Mr Leung said the sanction against the country has been lifted, and the 14-day visa-free arrangement for holders of diplomatic or official passports has been reinstated.

As the Philippine government has implemented measures to ensure tourist safety, the Black Outbound Travel Alert has reverted to the amber level it was before the tragedy.

Mr Leung thanked Mainland officials for their support, and the victims and their families for their trust and willingness to work with the Government.

Hong Kong and the Philippines issued a joint statement earlier today on the resolution arrangements.

The Manila mayor said two resolutions have been passed by its city council, one expressing an apology by the city's government for the incident, and the other declaring August 23 of the Gregorian calendar and July 14 of the Lunar calendar as days of prayer, in remembrance of the deceased.

Mr Leung said he hopes the deceased rest in peace, and the victims and their families move on with courage and strength.

He said bilateral relations between the two places will start a new chapter.
