CS opens new sports facilities
June 20, 2013
Chief Secretary Carrie Lam opened new home venues for four elite sports at the Hong Kong Sports Institute's Fo Tan headquarters today.
It is one of the signature events under the Vibrant Hong Kong theme in the “Hong Kong: Our Home” Campaign.
The new facilities are the rowing boathouse and the multi-purpose sports hall, which houses the squash courts, tenpin bowling centre, and wushu hall.
With the opening, rowing and tenpin bowling will have a new state-of-the-art elite training base, while squash and wushu will benefit from expanded and upgraded training facilities.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mrs Lam said the new facilities will allow the institute to train more full-time elite athletes in Hong Kong. It will help Hong Kong athletes achieve better results in the international sports arena.
Mrs Lam inspected the facilities after the ceremony, along with the international standard indoor swimming pool.
The new boathouse can store 140 boats, and the squash courts can be used as double and single courts. The 1,500 square metre wushu hall can accommodate up to 100 spectators.
In his 2006-07 Policy Address, the Chief Executive announced the redevelopment of the institute to provide world-class training facilities to elite athletes.
