Gov't to ensure LegCo quorum

May 16, 2012

Forty Government officers will be redeployed to the Legislative Council to ensure a quorum is maintained.

Secretary for Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Raymond Tam said today the Government has implemented the move, due to concerns the filibuster action taken by some LegCo members will seriously undermine the legislation process.

Extending the length of time the legislature sits is impossible due to September's LegCo election, he said, adding he hopes the legislative process returns to normal soon.

The Government is seeking to prevent lawmakers who resign from standing for re-election for six months.
