Inmates awarded for good academic results

Young inmates of Lai King Correctional Institution were today presented with academic and vocational certificates.

Twenty-eight current and former inmates obtained 60 passes - including 40 distinctions and credits - in the City & Guilds examinations, the Certificate of Education Examination, the LCCI International Qualifications examinations and tests organised by the Clothing Industry Training Authority.

They achieved good results in Chinese and English computer applications, mathematics, Chinese and English language, book-keeping, clothing product development, pattern making, plus food and beverage service.

Speaking at the certificate presentation ceremony, the institution's superintendent Elana Chan said the inmates proved they are as capable as anyone of attaining good academic results. She encouraged them to pursue their career aspirations.

The Correctional Services Department provides half-day compulsory education programmes and half-day vocational training for young offenders under age 2l.
