    Cigarette smuggling syndicate shut down

Customs officers have neutralised a syndicate smuggling cigarettes across the boundary for distribution in the northwest New Territories. They arrested 21 men and six women aged 19 to 77 and seized $9.7 million illicit cigarettes with a $5.2 million duty potential.

The three-month operation ended yesterday and saw officers seize 6.4 million illicit cigarettes and impound seven vehicles.

The Customs & Excise Department said the operation has hampered the syndicate's activities and uprooted its distribution network, including nine storage and distribution centres in the northwest New Territories.
